In February 2020, I learned I was pregnant. One month later, the world would shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My pregnancy was uneventful. For the most part I felt great! At 30 weeks, I went in for a routine ultrasound. It was also the first one I was able to do with my husband. After a brief explanation of the ultrasound results, I was told my son was at a high risk of being stillborn. We were told to go to an emergency room immediately. Despite the highest of hopes and all the prayers, I was rushed to an emergency delivery 2 days later. And there, my NICU journey began...
My son was born 2lbs 7oz. He was immediately intubated. He had his first surgery at just 13 hours old. I wasn't able to hold him until he was 8 days old. The next 109 days were a roller coaster riddled with life changing experiences.
I cried. I laughed. I prayed. I cursed. I fought. I prayed some more. We survived.
Before we even got home I knew there was a reason we were faced with this trial. Then we came up with the idea to raise funds to donate to families in the NICU where our son graduated from. We were overwhelmed with the support of our families and friends. These gifts then introduced us to more families which enlightened us to even more needs. It turns out, we were just getting started.
One day in a NICU is one day too many. The emotional stress it can cause a family is undeniable. Then, add the financial considerations. Many of these families are driving to and from the hospital everyday for weeks and even months on end. They are too tired to cook dinner after staring at a monitor all day, sick to their stomach waiting for the wrong type of sound to come from the machine. Some aren't even able to see their children fight for their lives because they live too far away and can't find housing at local shelters. There has to be change. Our mission is to encourage our community to help support these families in dire need.
